Spring Valley Hospital Debuts LEED Gold Expansion

LAS VEGAS — Spring Valley Hospital, located in Las Vegas, debuted a $28 million renovation and expansion on June 24, almost exactly a year after construction broke ground. Birmingham, Ala.-headquartered Brasfield & Gorrie completed the project ahead of schedule and under budget.

“Integrated project delivery principles and tools were critical assets throughout the life of this project,” said Brasfield & Gorrie Senior Project Manager David Craddock. “The team met weekly to prioritize, review and resolve project issues and opportunities. Lean tools included Last Planner, pull planning, A3s, CBAs, target value design and retrospectives. Also, there was a pervasive underlying culture that encouraged collaboration and continuous improvement.”

The project features a new 88,000-square-foot, four-floor patient tower addition and 15,000 square feet of renovation work. The new tower includes an 18-bed postpartum unit, 36-bed surgical unit, administrative offices and additional shell space for future growth. The team minimized variability in the nursing units, which were initially intended to house an office/administrative suite, according to Craddock. Also, the women’s center entrance was designed based on the patient experience and flow needs, resulting in an effective building layout.

“The project design was based on our understanding of the true need and use for the space,” Craddock said. “Through our collaborative design approach, all members of the project team were integrated into all aspects of the project, from the origination of design ideas to the evaluation and selection of processes. This approach minimized excess and increased flexibility.”

The project is designed to LEED Gold standards, and the project team specified an Energy Star target goal of 84. “Further, lighting, mechanical and insulation goals were designed to exceed the LEED Gold standard at the existing facility,” Craddock said. “In response to the desert setting, the team specified a cool roof, a high-efficiency envelope and extremely low-water-use landscaping.”

In addition to the new tower, Spring Valley Hospital added a 24-bed patient observation unit last fall. Located adjacent to the emergency department, the observation unit is for patients staying up to 23 hours while waiting on test results and being observed by health care providers before either being able to leave or being admitted to the hospital.

In January 2016, a new outpatient physical and occupational therapy center also opened in an adjacent medical office building. This December, two new surgical suites are also scheduled for completion. One of the suites will be a hybrid operating room, which will allow for flexibility. It can be used for cardiovascular surgeries with specialized imaging readily available, or everything can be shifted so that the OR can be used for other surgeries, depending upon the need, according to a statement.
