HCA StoneSprings Hospital Center Opens to Public

STERLING, Va. — For the first time in a century, a new hospital opened in Loudon County. The new StoneSprings Hospital Center in Sterling was built using a design that is able to reduce the square footage of the hospital, while also improving flow and organizing the departments to be more efficient.

With the focus of the project being the elimination of wasted or inefficient space, the Nashville, Tenn.-based architecture firm Greshman, Smith and Partners worked with the local staff to cut excess space, reducing the space per bed by 100 square feet, said Senior Project Manager Brig Eastman of Nashville, Tenn.-based Brasfield & Gorrie, who provided the general contractor services for the project. The 234,000-square-foot hospital opened to the public on Dec. 7.

The new, $95.8 million StoneSprings Hospital provides a much-needed service to the local community. The area is booming with growth — Loudon County is one of the fastest growing counties in the nation — but is underserved in the health care market, according to Eastman. One of the project team members, who was living near the site, had to use a hospital 30 minutes away when having a new baby, said Eastman.

The hospital, which is situated on a 51-acre, features 124 private patient rooms and will provide a large range of medical services. This includes a 24/7 ER, medical, surgical, labor and delivery, pediatric and intensive care services, a cardiac catheterization lab, and state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging and interventional equipment.

In addition to the hospital facility, Brasfield & Gorrie constructed a 100,000-square-foot medical office building on the 51-acre site. The location is less than 10 miles from Dulles International Airport, and it will serve all of Loudon County.

One of the biggest challenges for the project was the schedule. “The owner had a hard end date with their Certificate of Need (CON) expiration, and no issue could allow us to extend this date,” said Eastman.

The company worked closely with the subcontractors and vendors to identify projects that could be prefabricated off site to help speed up the progress on construction. “This effort, coupled with aggressive phasing, allowed us to overcome a full two-month delay and deliver the building in a total of 19 months, including the site clearing and grading,” said Eastman.

Construction on the project began in March 2014 and was completed in October 2015. HCA Virginia Health System is the owner on the project. This was the first project that Brasfield & Gorrie has completed in Loudoun County, and it serves as “an example of the quality of performance our existing clients have come to expect from Brasfield & Gorrie,” said Eastman.
