Southside Hospital Plans ER Expansion

BAY SHORE, N.Y. — Southside Hospital, a 341-bed tertiary facility in Bay Shore, is in the early stages of a multi-million dollar expansion of its emergency department.

The emergency department will be named in honor of the Bohlsen Family for their lead gift. The first phase of the project is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2016.

“This expansion will more than triple the size of Southside’s present emergency department, enabling the hospital to improve its level of service and efficiency to better accommodate the more than 70,000 visits it receives each year,” said Donna Moravick, the hospital’s executive director, in a statement.

“This emergency department will bring much more than simply greater space; it breaks away from traditional design to allow for optimization of flow and comfort for all patients regardless of acuity,” added John D’Angelo, vice president of emergency medicine at the North Shore-LIJ Health System, in a statement.

In July 2014, Southside Hospital became the first Level II trauma center verified by the American College of Surgeons on Long Island and in the entire metropolitan area.

“We are very grateful to the Bohlsen Family for their extraordinary generosity and support as we move forward with a state-of-the-art expansion of our Bohlsen Family Emergency Department to create a facility commensurate with the medical excellence we provide.” Moravick said in a statement.

A member of North Shore-LIJ Health System, Southside Hospital is the health system’s only tertiary-care facility in Suffolk County. The hospital offers centers in cardiology, orthopedics and neurosciences as well as women’s health services. Southside offers North Shore-LIJ’s cardiac surgery program with a hybrid operating room.

The North Shore-LIJ Orthopaedic Institute at Southside Hospital specializes in multidisciplinary orthopedic care for the entire spectrum of musculoskeletal disorders. Southside Hospital is the only Long Island hospital that has received accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities for four rehabilitation programs, including inpatient, stroke, brain injury and outpatient rehabilitation. Among these programs is the Regional Center for Brain Injury Rehabilitation.
