McCarthy Completes SIH Cancer Insitute

CARTERVILLE, lll. — McCarthy Building Companies, based in St. Louis, has completed the new $15.3 million Southern Illinois Healthcare (SIH) Cancer Institute in Carterville.
Built to improve community access to the latest in cancer care and treatment, SIH held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new facility on February 18 and is now seeing its first patients.

Construction began on the new 44,000-square-foot, full-service SIH Cancer Institute in September 2013. The facility combines existing radiation therapy locations and medical oncology clinics in one convenient location. Situated on a 15-acre site east of Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge north of Illinois Route 13, the new facility helps to alleviate the need to travel great distances to receive care. Bringing patients, doctors and services under one roof will increase efficiency and improve the quality of service.

The state-of-the-art facility includes two radiation vaults, medical oncology infusion spaces, medical clinic suites, administrative offices, a lab, a rehab gym, meeting rooms, retail space and a self-service eating area. Lawrence Group of St. Louis provided architecture and interior design services. TKH Inc., also based in St. Louis, provided health care facility planning services, and McClure Engineering of Fort Dodge, Iowa, provided mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering services.

The team relied heavily on communication to all stakeholders to ensure the project was completed on time, on budget, safely and with the highest level of quality. “The communication was some of the best I have experienced on a project,” said Dan Boeckman, corporate director of facilities for SIH, in a statement. He noted that “the McCarthy team was on top of all the changes as the project progressed and was able to keep all users happy while still completing the project in a timely manner.”

The building’s design incorporates a number of sustainable elements. Natural materials, natural light and views of the surrounding landscape will promote wellness and healing in the cancer patients who visit the facility. The project was designed and built to meet the requirements for LEED certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

”While there are numerous elements to this project that I consider successful, one of the most rewarding aspects was building the relationship with SIH, LGA and McClure,” said Andy Poirot, McCarthy’s senior project manager, in a statement. “The collaboration of the team is to be commended and was integral to completing this project on time and on budget.”
